As more and more robots will be used outside traditional industrial environments, robots need to be able to interact with vulnerable subjects such as humans and deal with uncertain environments or unknown objects. Soft robotics is an emerging field of research that addresses these issues by the use of soft or compliant elements to overcome the limitations of traditional rigid systems for such tasks. A variety of approaches how to introduce and exploit the required compliance is currently researched making soft robotics a diverse and challenging research area. Smart materials are applied in soft robotic structures. Soft bio-inspired muscles and sensors or variable stiffness actuators are developed for the use in soft robotic systems. Haptic control is employed for the safe interaction between humans and robots. This summer school will provide an overview over this broad field and in-depth knowledge on key issues of soft robotics to interested young researchers.


During this summer school, we will give an introduction into current issues and techniques in soft robotics research. Classes will cover a wide range of relevant topics from materials via modeling to controls. Additional hands-on exercises provide a deeper understanding of the methods taught and illustrate their implementation. More specifically, there will be lectures on

Finally, in a number of selected case studies presented by internationally recognized experts in the field, we will point to areas of stimulating research and allow you to see beyond the current state of the art.

The school is designed for graduate students of all levels. A solid background in engineering will enable you to profit most from the lectures and exercises, while the course might still serve as a good introduction to people of different background who want to learn more about this inspiring field.
